Senior Director, Product Design   2008 – 2011

Brought user-centric development to an industry with historically complex interfaces. Built Product Design, and Usability teams from scratch, managing ID, User Experience, Visual Design, and Chassis/Enclosure Mechanical Engineering.

Developed PacBio™RS next-generation DNA sequencing instrument to analyze biochemical reactions in real time. 

Established flagship standards for ease-of-use, workflow, and appearance while incorporating complexities of laser optics, robots, and loaders. 

Engineered robust, three-part chassis/enclosure sets to: isolate vibrations from precision optics; reduce heat and contaminant damage; and ensure compatibility for diverse customer lab environments.  

Designed a family of high volume consumable chip and reagent packages including the iconic, low cost SMRT™Cell 8Pac. 

Educated science-oriented team members on high volume sourcing and manufacturing practices and the importance of brand-defining design. 

Managed design of more than 100 precision components, along with tooling and qualification of 56 custom plastic parts.
